I am in desperate need of experienced advice from all you mommies out there. We are new at this parenting thing and need some suggestions.
What is the best way to transition Haley from her crib to her new "big girl" bed? Would you get rid of the crib altogether? Keep the crib for naps? Would you lay with your child until they got used to the new bed? Or does that establish a bad habit?
Thanks for your help.

One bit of advice that I HAVE heard is to have the "switch over" completed before baby #2 arrives so Haley doesn't feel like baby stole her bed. We took Talmage WITH us mattress shopping and made a huge deal about him getting a big boy bed. By the time we bought it, shipped it in daddy's truck and got it set up, he was DYING to sleep in it.
We are trying this right now too. 2 nights that went pretty well. We bought a bed at a garage sale and it took a few weeks to get it in shape, and we were talking it up the whole time. We also childproofed the inside doorknob of Finn's room before he realized he could open it. I didn't want him getting out in the middle of the night and falling down stairs. And he doesn't know any better now, he was never able to open it anyways.
I just left Kenzie in her crib until she was ready for a big girl bed and wanted to sleep in a big girl bed. I ended up buying 2 cribs, but i didn't have to worry about a newborn and trying to keep my other child in her bed. Saved me a ton of headache. Good luck! Unless she is climbing out of her crib I would just leave her in it... that's just my opinion though.
So wish we could leave her in, but yes, she is climbing out - CONSTANTLY! She is a wild thing. :)
Thanks so much for the great advice, guys. We are having a better night so far tonight so cross your fingers for us.
I am probably not the best mom, but we went cold turkey. Took the crib down, put pillows on the floor and that was that. We had a couple falling off the bed incidents but nothing major. If the crib is there you will be to tempted to put her back in it!!! However my advice now is to keep them in their crib as long as you possibly can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heart you!
Making a big fuss over the bed is huge! Everyone who comes over HAS to see the new bed! The first time Scotty slept in his new bed he was already asleep when I put him in it and he woke up in his new bed and was great ever since. Have you already transitioned? How's it going so far? I agree w/ above comment... She's got to be in her bed before baby #2 comes so she doesn't think the baby stole her bed.
Good luck!

We just made this transition a few days ago. We decided to wait until he would escape from his crib and then we thought it would be time for the big boy bed. So, he finally took the plunge (literally, but didn't get hurt), mind you the same day that I got my tonsils out...of course! But, we just put him right into his bed and Dane into the crib (he had been sleeping in the bassinette in our room for far too long). We didn't have any problems with Logan feeling like Dane stole his bed and he feels so big and cool in his new bed. We really haven't had any problems, thank goodness.
I know some are opposed to this but, we flipped the door lock to the outside of his room just in case he kept coming out in the middle of the night, but we haven't had to use it yet and hope we don't. I think he was really ready for it. I hope this helps, but I am new at all of this too:)
Hi Brynn!! Love catching up with your blog!!! My advice to you is to wait until she is ready to move to a big girl bed! I know it may be a pain to have two cribs but I cant imagine trying to keep Sariah in a big girl bed while having a newborn and already hardly getting any sleep! Sariah actually started climbing out just recently so our dear friend Amanda found a crib tent at a yard sale and got it for me!! What a blessing that was!! Its a hard call just because some kids have no problem transitioning into a big bed! But some do!! Whatever you decide hope it all works out!! Miss you!!
